NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The U.S. men are ready to go on the offensive as they chase a berth in the 2012 Olympics on the same field where the Americans qualified for Beijing in 2008.

Coach Caleb Porter has held a handful of camps to implement the kind of aggressive, possession-oriented attack he uses at Akron, and the U.S. under-23 team will get the chance to test the approach in games that matter starting Thursday night against Cuba. Porter said coaches have a plan to handle the tight schedule and manage the roster, with games against Cuba, Canada on Saturday and El Salvador on Monday night.

"This group's fit and they're very deep, and diverse in terms of what they have and what they bring to the table - I think the fact that we can switch gears with changing a player," Porter said.

Porter also has some leadership coming from Adu, who was 18 when he helped the U.S. earn a berth in the 2008 Olympics right here at LP Field, home to the NFL's Tennessee Titans. Adu said that was the biggest tournament he'd ever been a part of and called that experience the greatest time of his life. Now he's the player with experience on the roster.

"The guys come, they ask questions sometimes, and it's nice," Adu said. "I've never had a, quote, presence or say on any team, because I've always been the youngest player on the team, so this is a nice little change."

The Americans have set their sights on winning the tournament, trying to grab the nine possible points in Nashville.

"That's what we've worked so hard for, and it's finally here," Adu said. "But we're pretty confident in our team, in our system. As you saw against Mexico, we executed pretty well. Going into these games, I know some of the teams may sit back, so obviously we're going to have to be patient and stick to our plan and we'll be OK. Because we definitely have the individual talent to take us to the next level."

Agudelo said the system is a little different and more possessive. He said the players like keeping the ball - a lot.

"And it's fun to play with a team like this, because I think the kind of soccer that most people enjoy is playing with the ball," Agudelo said. "And when we have the ball for the majority of time we have the most chances to go toward the goal and finish off the chances and score."

Shea isn't worried about fatigue.

"The prize is going to London, and if you can't up for that you shouldn't be here," Shea said. "Being able to play here, with kids I played with on the youth national team, I enjoy it a lot."

Pet Adoption Day at Petco | Stony Brook Independent ...

More than 3.7 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States. Last Chance Animal Rescue, a non-for-profit organization, works to save the lives of these animals by finding them new homes.

On March 10, 2012 Last Chance Animal Rescue volunteers joined with Lake Grove Petco to host a dog adoption event. There were 15 dogs up for adoption and according to Barbara Schiano, Director of Adoptions, they all came from shelters where they were most likely going to be euthanized.

?I?ve spent about 10 years now trying to help animals in need,? said Schiano. ?It?s tough at times, but it really is the most rewarding thing I?ve ever done.?

Up for adoption were dogs of all ages, all eligible to be taken home right away. Potential adopters were able to play with all the dogs and get to know their personalities. Of the 15 dogs there, seven were adopted throughout the course of the day.

Christopher Frost and his wife Emily were looking for a dog to bring home to their 5-year-old daughter, Samantha. After browsing through all the potential candidates they finally decided on Puffy, a 3-month-old Labrador Retriever who was rescued from a kill facility in Georgia.

?We?ve always wanted a dog ever since we saw ?Marley and Me,?? Emily said as Chris laughed. ?We want a friend for Samantha that will always be there as she grows up.?

According to Kendall Williams, a volunteer at Last Chance Rescue, when families adopt dogs they?re not only saving a life, but also gaining a lifelong companion.

?When you adopt a homeless dog, you?re kind of setting the world right,? said Williams. ?So many beautiful dogs die in shelters every year, but we?re doing our best to save them. If only one family brings home a dog today I feel good.?

The dogs spent the day playing with each other inside Petco and meeting potential families. There were more than 100 people throughout the day that came in to see the animals.

?I want to adopt one so badly, they are so cute? said Sara Reid a 23-year-old from Setauket. ?I?m thinking I might just bring one home without telling my mom.?

Because Last Chance Animal Rescue has no permanent facility, foster homes will house the dogs that weren?t adopted until the next event. These foster parents care for the dogs temporarily, until they can find a permanent home. Joyce Clark, a 34-year-old from Sayville, is a foster parent for two of the dogs that are currently up for adoption, but has been volunteering as a parent for five years. Her responsibilities as a parent are to care for the dogs until they get adopted, however long that may be.

?It?s pretty heartbreaking,? said Clark. ?You get to know these dogs so well and kind of get attached and then one day it?s just time and they get adopted.?

According to Schiano, Last Chance Animal Rescue saved more than 900 pets in 2011 and they hope to reach 1,000 by the end of 2012.

Manning watch moves to desert, but no sign of QB

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) ? The Peyton Manning stakeout moved to Arizona on Saturday, even though there was no sign of the superstar in the desert.

Manning spent nearly six hours at the Denver Broncos' facility on Friday, and speculation was high that the Cardinals would be his next stop.

The Cardinals' facility was a bee hive of activity as the setting for Kurt Warner's annual "Ultimate Football Experience," a fundraiser for his First Things First foundation that features current and past football stars. Among them was Cardinals star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who said he knew nothing of any contact the team may have made with Manning.

"I haven't heard anything," he said. "I'd like to feel like if he was going to be here I would probably hear something from somebody."

The presence of Fitzgerald, one of the best receivers in the game, is considered a major reason Manning would consider the Cardinals, who finished last season 7-2 after a 1-6 start to wind up 8-8.

The team has already invested millions in quarterback Kevin Kolb and is scheduled to pay him $7 million if he is on the roster Thursday. The Cardinals, though, had more success with second-year quarterback John Skelton starting than with Kolb, who missed much of the season with turf toe and a concussion.

Fitzgerald, the Cardinals' career leading receiver, said he understood why Arizona would be interested in Manning.

"He's a four-time MVP. He's a Super Bowl champion," he said. "He's arguably the best quarterback to ever play football. He's a free agent. If he's healthy, I know he's somebody that can help any team that he goes to. I understand the interest. It makes sense."

Fitzgerald said he wasn't surprised Arizona is in the mix.

"After last year, Michael (team President Michael Bidwill) said he was going to continue staying aggressive," Fitzgerald said, "and he's going to do everything he can to make sure we're going to be able to compete for an NFC West championship everything single year. He hasn't done anything to this point to make us believe anything different."

Besides Fitzgerald, the Cardinals can offer a state-of-the-art stadium with a retractable roof and natural grass field that slides out into the sunshine when not being used. Then there is the weather ? sunshine with the temperature in the high 70s on Saturday.

The Cardinals have a strong young defense but Manning might be concerned with an inconsistent offensive line that could lose left tackle Levi Brown, unless he restructures his contract. Other than Fitzgerald, the receivers are young.

Warner, who led St. Louis and Arizona to the Super Bowl, said he's a bit surprised the Cardinals are in the running, mainly because of the investment they have made in Kolb, who was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick.

"But I think that speaks volumes about where the organization is at right now," Warner said, "how far they've come, in saying 'Hey, we want to win. No offense to the guys that we have, but if we feel like we can upgrade a position and we can be better, we're going to make a play at that. You have to commend an organization for doing that."

Warner, now an analyst for the NFL Network, does not see the Cardinals as favorites in the Manning sweepstakes.

"I think Miami still has the upper hand," he said. "I don't necessarily know why I think that. I just think since day one they've made it known 'We want him to be our guy and we'll do whatever we have to do to get him.' I think if you're a guy in that situation, at that stage of your career, that's what you want to hear. You want to go somewhere where they're saying 'We're going to roll out the red carpet. Whatever you need we're willing to make those moves, bring a receiver with you, sign you to whatever kind of deal you want.'"

Manning became one of the most sought after free agents ever when he was released by the Indianapolis Colts, the first move in a massive roster makeover for the team that had the worst record in the NFL last season, when their star quarterback was injured. The Colts dumped Manning and prepared to take Andrew Luck with the first pick in the draft.

After an emotional farewell in Indianapolis, Manning has swiftly moved to find a new home, reportedly with a Tuesday deadline. After a series of neck surgeries, he has reported good progress in regenerating the nerves and regaining his masterful passing ability.

He got a high-profile welcome in Denver.

According to The Denver Post, the Broncos sent a plane to pick up Manning in South Florida, where he has a condo. He had traveled there after an emotional news conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday, when he said goodbye to the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 1998 and he led to the 2007 Super Bowl championship.

The plane then stopped in Stillwater, Okla., where Broncos vice president of football operations and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders were watching Oklahoma State's pro day. The Broncos management met up with Manning, and everyone flew back to Denver.

ESPNews carried live coverage of the flight arriving at an airport in Denver, then also followed Manning's car ride to Broncos headquarters. And while Manning met with Elway & Co. inside the building, a blue helicopter hovered overhead.

Just where he was on Saturday was a mystery, with the Cardinals staying silent about anything to do with Manning. The Kansas City Chiefs also have expressed interest, but there was no known scheduled visit there.

"There's excitement around our league, and excitement about what we're going to see from Peyton Manning, where he's going to go, if he's going to make a team an instant competitor for a championship," Warner said. "All those things are great for our league. I'm excited to see, just like everyone else, how this plays out."

Conflict management is crucial for social group cohesion, and while humans may still be working out some of the details, new research shows that some chimpanzees engage in impartial, third-party "policing" activity as well.

The full results are published Mar. 7 in the open access journal PLoS ONE. Anthropologists from the University of Zurich, led by Prof. Carel van Schaik and Claudia Rudolf von Rohr, reveal that chimpanzees mediate conflicts between other group members not for their own direct benefit, but to preserve the peace within the group. The authors suggest that this behavior can be regarded as an early evolutionary form of morality.

Until now, this morally motivated behavior in chimpanzees was only ever documented anecdotally. However, the new study now confirms that chimpanzees intervene impartially in a conflict to guarantee the stability of their group, exhibiting prosocial behavior based on an interest in community concern.

This policing activity was rare and generally limited to high-ranking individuals. The researchers also found that the arbiters were more willing to intervene impartially if several quarrelers were involved in a dispute, probably because such conflicts are more likely to jeopardize group peace.

"The interest in community concern that is highly developed in us humans and forms the basis for our moral behavior is deeply rooted. It can also be observed in our closest relatives," concludes Rudolf von Rohr.

The Darwin-Wallace mystery solved: Darwin vindicated from accusations of deceit

ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2012) ? A National University of Singapore. study has traced historical shipping records and vindicated Darwin from accusations of deceit.

For the past four decades, Charles Darwin had been accused of keeping the essay of fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace for a fortnight, thereby enabling him to revise elements of his theory of evolution, before jointly announcing the theory of evolution by natural selection in July 1858. Just recently, two researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), supported by a private donation, reconstructed the route taken by Wallace's letter to Darwin from Ternate and provided evidence that Wallace sent the letter a month later than historians had always assumed, thus clearing Darwin of the accusations against him.

Dr John van Wyhe, a historian of science and Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Biological Sciences & History at NUS and his collaborator Dr Kees Rookmaaker, published their study, titled "A new theory to explain the receipt of Wallace's Ternate Essay by Darwin in 1848," in the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society in December 2011.

The controversy

Alfred Russel Wallace, the naturalist who spent eight years in Singapore and South East Asia between 1854 and 1862, discovered evolution by natural selection independently of Charles Darwin. Wallace had a dramatic eureka moment while living on the island of Ternate in the Moluccas (now Indonesia). He wrote up his ideas in an essay which he sent in 1858, to Charles Darwin, for him to pass on to noted geologist Charles Lyell. Darwin's accusers claim that he waited two weeks to do so, lying about the date of receipt to give himself time to revise his own ideas in the light of Wallace's.

Wallace's essay was published together with an essay by Darwin in 1858 and marks the first publication of the theory of evolution which then resulted in one of the greatest revolutions in the history of science.

How the mystery began

In 1972 a researcher found another letter from Wallace to a friend named Bates that was sent on the March 1858 steamer from the island of Ternate in modern Indonesia. The letter still bore postmarks from Singapore and London which showed that it arrived in London on 3 June 1858 -- two weeks before Darwin said he received the essay from Wallace. Thus began the mystery -- how could two letters from Wallace leave Ternate on the same steamer and travel along the same mail route back to London but Darwin received his two weeks later than Bates did? This mystery has led to numerous conspiracy theories. For example, several writers have claimed that Darwin stole ideas from Wallace's essay during the time he kept the letter secret. But most other evidence suggests that Darwin received the letter when he said he did.

So did Darwin receive the letter when he said he did, or not?

"I initially assumed that it was impossible to solve since so many historians had examined it before. But it occurred to me that we really have no contemporary evidence of when Wallace sent the essay to Darwin, only his much later recollection that he sent it by the next post after writing it in February. That suggested that the essay was sent in March 1858. But this recollection from years later seemed to me not very reliable as evidence of what really happened at the time. The other evidence that Darwin received it on 18 June 1858 seemed more likely. All of his correspondence changed dramatically after that date for example. Since that side of the correspondence was all one really had to go on, it occurred to me to trace the letter from Darwin's end, rather than Wallace's," said Dr van Wyhe.

If Darwin really received it on 18 June- how could it get there? It had come to his house in the countryside from London the day before, the 17th.

Dr van Wyhe then found that a steamer arrived in England the day before, the 16th with mail from India and South East Asia. This was surely not a coincidence -- Wallace's letter must have been on that ship. Dr van Wyhe then had to trace back the remainder of the 9,240 miles of the journey from England, through the Mediterranean, across Egypt, to Sri Lanka, Penang, Singapore, Jakarta and so on. His assistant on the Wallace Online project, Dr Kees Rookmaaker, who speaks Dutch, was an invaluable help as he was able to check the ship arrival and departure times in the Dutch newspapers and sources for the Dutch East Indies, while Dr van Wyhe went through the English newspapers. It was an exciting detective story tracing the connections that mail batch took from London to South East Asia.

"Eventually our mail itinerary was completed all the way back to Ternate and we were astonished to find that there was an unbroken series of mail connections to Ternate -- not in March as all other writers before had assumed, but in April 1858! My further research has clarified why Wallace mailed it later than we assumed and many other parts of this famous, but misunderstood chapter in the history of science," added Dr van Wyhe.

"First of all, we now know that Wallace was replying to an early letter from Darwin- and that letter from Darwin arrived in Ternate on the March steamer. We have assembled the first complete collection of all the surviving Wallace correspondence from Ternate and nearby islands. These reveal that he never replied to a letter on the same steamer which delivered it. Apparently the turn over time was too short. Therefore this is an additional reason to doubt that Wallace could have sent the famous letter to Darwin in March as so long assumed," said Dr van Wyhe.

Dr van Wyhe is currently completing a major new book on Wallace in South East Asia which aims to radically revise the traditional story of Wallace and his famous independent discovery of evolution.

Dr van Wyhe is the Director of the research project in Singapore -- Wallace Online, a website which aims to be the definitive and reliable source of Wallace's work. It will contain all of Wallace's books and article, as well as a complete collection of his specimens collected from South-east Asia, and much more, such as a revised itinerary of his whereabouts during these years and his notebooks edited for the first time to modern scholarly standards. The website will be launched in 2013, the centenary of the death of Wallace.
