To be successful, nature conservation measures must account for the complexity of the human impact and how nature responds to them, at different spatial and temporal scales. "Scale-sensitive research" emerges as a new, interdisciplinary field in nature conservation where researchers adjust concepts, analyses, and tools to the scale in which these might be used. Policy-makers, on their side, must ensure that the decisions they take resolve ecological problems at the relevant administrative and spatial scales.

Scientists involved in SCALES, a large-scale integrating project funded by the 7th Framework Program (FP7) of the European Union, have identified a series of mismatches between the scale of research at which conservation biologists study how best to protect biological diversity and the need for implementation of scale-based approaches in policy and management, especially in the design of Natura 2000, Green Infrastructure and biodiversity monitoring.

These concerns and new findings have been discussed at a dedicated SCALES symposium at the 3rd European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB) in Glasgow on 28th-31st of August 2012. Dr Klaus Henle from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig, Germany and coordinator of SCALES opened the discussion: "It has long been known that scale issues play an important role in ecological research. In recent years, however, it has become increasingly clear that scale-awareness is also crucial in designing and implementing conservation practices. Conservation in a rapidly-changing world requires systematic and dynamic approaches to shorten the time from research findings to policy implementation."

Prof. William Kunin from the University of Leeds, UK, added: "Policy-makers should consider not only or mainly the need to protect species richness (that is what scientists call "alpha-diversity"), but also changes in species' composition from one habitat to another, or what is called "beta-diversity". Focusing on beta-diversity, rather than on number of species or certain focal species in a given area or scale, will certainly enhance conservation effectiveness".

Dr. Henle showed that the problem with variation is relevant not only to space but also to time. For example, areas that may be identified as critical to protect may differ if we use data from different years. Hence, even well-researched programs to select protected areas will fail if they don't consider changes in species distribution and composition between years (that is what scientists call "temporal variation").

Dr Guy Pe'er from the UFZ suggested that "connectivity between remnants of natural habitats must be more effectively included in policy and planning, in order to allow species to survive through climate change: if natural habitats remain so fragmented, many species simply will not be able to alter their distributions with changing climate". Many scientists are aware of the problem, but nevertheless connectivity still does not attract sufficient attention of policy makers and planners, partly because of dealing with "larger scale problems", so to say, of ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services. Novel individual-based simulation models, presented by Guy Pe'er and Greta Bocedi, give some tools to bridge this gap and reduce the risks of errors when moving from local studies to tackling large-scale threats.

Dr Szabolcs Lengyel and his team from the University of Debrecen, Hungary presented a survey of the literature to investigate how specific today's conservation strategies are to certain scales. Although they found a generally increasing awareness of scale-related issues in conservation, they also identified important gaps. The results of the study call conservationists and policy-makers to develop scale-sensitive approaches, in much the same way as cell biologists may use different levels of magnifications under the microscope depending on what they wish to observe and study.

"Perhaps the biggest gap between scientists and policy makers is the gap of speed. We need to work and publish faster. The scientific work will fail to target its most important audience as long as the time until publication is slow, the language is often too technical and the outcomes are published in specialized journals of limited access. Instead, we need to communicate and share our data and findings more openly and far more rapidly", concluded Dr. Henle, the Editor-in-Chief of the new, open-access, inter-disciplinary journal Nature Conservation.

###

Launched at the Congress by Dr. Klaus Henle and Prof. Lyubomir Penev from the Bulgarian Academy of Science, the journal Nature Conservation aims at bridging the gap between conservation science and practice using innovative publishing and dissemination technologies. The journal strongly encourages papers not only on biological topics but also on ethical, social, socio-economic, legal and policy issues related to management and use of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Calgary Doors | Art Wurst Weight Loss

Replace old and outdated sliding glass patio doors with calgary door. The look is bold and modern, something that new buyers will really appreciate. It's the kind of small touch that is quick, easy, and inexpensive but will give you the most bang for your hard earn buck. Before you begin your next home improvement project, ask for help from friends and family members. If you wait until you have already started, it may be difficult to find the help you need. You may also have trouble finishing your project on time, adding extra stress to your work. To improve the value of your home, you should think about remodeling it. A home that looks new can be sold for more. Adding new rooms or an outside patio can increase its value. Consider remodeling as a form of investment and make sure you know what most people want, before you start. Give your bathroom a unique touch by deciding on a theme. Most people spend hours in their bathrooms, but apart from the coordinated colors, nothing seems to be unique. Come up with fun themes like pirate, under the sea, at the beach, or shipwrecked. Finding accessories for your idea can be fun and give your bathroom a sense of personality. Make sure you keep the filter for your air conditioning unit clean. If the filter gets clogged up, the air conditioning unit will have to work harder to cool your house, using up more energy. It can also result in the unit running longer than it should be needed. You should change your filter at least once a month to prevent buildup. Calgary doors One important aspect of doing home improvement projects is measuring. Three must-have, measuring tools for projects are measuring tape, a ruler and a level. The measuring tape allows you to get dimensions of space and of the parts you may use. A ruler allows you to measure and create straight lines. A level allows you to make sure a surface is flat and not inclining or declining. Almost all of us, at one point of time or another, have had the unfortunate experience of getting involved in an accident that was not really our fault. Such casualties may have occurred because some high-earning corporate slave chose the metallic comforts of his cell phone, over safety, as he steered his Lamborghini to a dangerous curve on a busy road; or simply because your ?friendly? neighbourhood restaurant forgot to fix sharp objects around the joint, causing your toddlers? first experience with ?The House of Flying Daggers?. In most cases, such incidents lead to ugly conflicts between the unsuspecting victims and their callous perpetrators. However, there happens to be an easy legal way of settling these disputes. In such cases, it is best to contact an experienced accident claim specialists, who can enable a party to extract a compensation for the injuries incurred by him, because of somebody else?s negligence.Depending on the severity of the damage, accident claim specialists allow victims to take home a significant chunk of monetary assistance from people responsible for their condition, thereby obliterating any need for seeking unnecessary health insurance on one?s own. Such specialists are experts in the complicated legal procedures that surround such accident claims.

When, a party contacts such an expert Claim Company, they receive invaluable consultation about the situation at hand in simple layman language. They are also made available to added information, like, the documents or evidences that must be furnished to level one?s claim; and detailed advice on the necessary course of action that accident claims must be undertaken. Further, all reputed Accident claim specialists work with close assistance of certified medical practitioners. Such practitioners make a thorough evaluation of the damages suffered by the person. Based on these, an injury list, covering an estimation of the total compensation to be charged, is made. The Claim Company, in question, then sends out this list to the culprit, informing him about the legal intentions of the client. If the guilty defendant chooses to seek legal assistance of his own, then the accident claim solicitors proceed with a court course and make sure that the culprit pays, in accordance to the guidelines of Accident Claim Laws.

As one can amply gauge, the expertise ? of an experienced accident claim specialists ? is highly beneficial in making unapologetic and careless people pay for their actions. Due to this, many people choose to maintain close business relationships with qualified specialists, whose services can be sought at any time. This is because we are living in a highly unsafe world and are operating in hazardous work environments. It is the duty of every citizen and establishment-owner to abide by the safety guidelines laid down by law. In case they fail to do this, we are perfectly liable to make our grievances vocal so that our future generations live by example and prosper in a world that does not resemble a concrete jungle of horror.

Fisker halting Surf production, but will build you one if you've got a 'big enough checkbook'

Like the ambitious diner at the all-you-can-eat-buffet, Fisker's got a lot on its plate. Between recalling all of its self-immolating Karma models, taking flack from its rivals and hiring a new CEO, something had to give. As such, it's halted production on the Surf and Sunset while it concentrates on getting the Nina / Atlantic onto the streets. However, one-percenters needing a five-door EV are in luck -- Fisker's Roger Ormisher has said that "if someone came along with a big enough checkbook" they'd discuss building a model tailored to their needs. While he remained coy about a specific price in his statement to Autoblog (after the break), a Fisker Buzz member has pegged the figure to be $200,000 -- but hey, that's pocket change to you, right?

Following Free Internet Marketing Strategies To Get More Views On ...

marketingPlease Like. This video encompasses Internet Marketing Strategies That You Can Follow In Order To Get More Views On YouTube. I have broken down the content of this video in a list of a 42 question questionnaire that you can answer yourself to clearly reflect if you take advantage of the internet marketing strategies that primarily utilize Search engine optimization to help your channel rapidly grow.

Internet Marketing Description:

?

Internet marketing, also known as web marketing, online marketing, webvertising, or e-marketing, is referred to as the marketing (generally promotion) of products or services over the Internet. Internet marketing is considered to be broad in scope[citation needed] because it not only refers to marketing on the Internet, but also includes marketing done via e-mail and wireless media. Digital customer data and electronic customer relationship Management (ECRM) systems are also often grouped together under internet marketing.[1]

Internet marketing ties together the creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising and sales.[2] Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along many different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, email marketing, mobile advertising, and Web 2.0 strategies.[citation needed]

In 2008, The New York Times, working with comScore, published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found that the potential for collecting data was up to 2,500 times per user per month.

Internet marketing is broadly divided in to the following[4] types:
? Display advertising: the use of web banners or banner ads placed on a third-party website or blog to drive traffic to a company?s own website and increase product awareness.[4]

? Search engine marketing (SEM): a form of Marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of either paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion, or through the use of free search engine optimization techniques.[5]

? Search engine optimization (SEO): the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the ?natural? or un-paid (?organic? or ?algorithmic?) search results.[6]

? Social media marketing: the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.[7]

? Email marketing: involves directly marketing a commercial message to a group of people using electronic mail.[8]

? Referral marketing: a method of promoting products or services to new customers through referrals, usually word of mouth.[9]

? Affiliate marketing: a marketing practice in which a Business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate?s own marketing efforts.[10]

? Inbound marketing: involves creating and freely sharing informative content as a means of converting prospects into customers and customers into repeat buyers.[citation needed]

? Video marketing: This type of marketing specializes in creating videos that engage the viewer into a buying state by presenting information in video form and guiding them to a product or service[citation needed] Online video is increasingly becoming more popular among internet users and companies are seeing it as a viable method of attracting customers.[
Advantages:
Internet marketing is inexpensive when examining the ratio of cost to the reach of the target audience.[citation needed] Companies can reach a wide audience for a small fraction of traditional advertising budgets.[citation needed] The nature of the medium allows consumers to research and to purchase products and services conveniently.[citation needed] Therefore, businesses have the advantage of appealing to consumers in a medium that can bring results quickly.[citation needed] The strategy and overall effectiveness of marketing campaigns depend on business goals and cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis.

WikiLeaks website back up after attacks

12 hrs.

This story was updated at 6:45 p.m. Monday.

WikiLeaks.org went back online late Monday after a private company stepped in to help the doument-sharing site, which had been offline for more than a week as the result of a?massive distributed denial-of- service (DDoS) attack.

CloudFlare, a Web performance and security company, said it stepped into help after seeing WikiLeaks' request for help on Twitter.

?An individual or group identifying itself as "Anti?Leaks" has taken?credit for the outage, which has also knocked out many?WikiLeaks mirror sites.

Hacker group Anonymous, behind many of the DDoS attacks on government websites in the past, including the CIA, and which posted the hacked?emails of law enforcement officials, said on one of its blogs:

We are now witnessing cyber wars, with most Wikileaks sites under sustained DDoS attack over several days. On one side are Wikileaks itself and it?s hactivist?(sic)?supporters, such as Anonymous. On the other side are US Govt supporters.

Anonymous, a strong supporter of WikiLeaks,?provided "two ways" to access WikiLeaks information, one using Tor, an anonymous network;?the other using a variety of mirror sites that have been set up but not yet attacked by AntiLeaks.

Among the sites is one called "Global Files," which features files?some?security experts speculate is the main reason behind the current?WikiLeaks attacks.??

The files are documents from intelligence firm Stratfor,?which deal with a secret surveillance system in the U.S.?called TrapWire. As?Carole Theriault of Sophos Security wrote Monday, the WikiLeaks attacks happened after the group published "the latest of its Global Intelligence Files (GIF), discussing the implementation of TrapWire in public spaces in the US."

Meanwhile, AntiLeaks said Monday in a posting?that Internet chatter that the group is U.S.-government backed?is not true:

"We find the speculation that we are not behind these attacks and/or that we are CIA/NSA/FBI or even wikileaks themselves to be downright comical."

French economy sees zero growth in Q2

(AP) ? France's economy was stagnant in the second quarter, the government said Tuesday, amid worries that Europe's No. 2 economy is hovering on the edge of a new recession.

The preliminary estimates released Tuesday by the state statistics agency Insee mark the third straight quarter without growth.

The figures were in line with Insee's earlier forecast for no growth in domestic product for the quarter. But they were better than estimates by France's central bank, which had forecast a 0.1 percent contraction in the second quarter and a continued drop in the third quarter.

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici expressed hope for growth in the second half of the year despite the lackluster first half. Speaking on Europe-1 radio, he acknowledged that the economy is "too weak" but stressed that France is staying stable even as "most of its partners" are in recession, including Spain, Italy and Britain.

The number of jobs in France and consumer spending both shrank in the second quarter, Insee said. Imports grew more than exports, exacerbating concerns about France's growing trade deficit.

While the lack of economic contraction is a relief for France's government, the lack of growth is a challenge for French President Francois Hollande, marking his first 100 days in office Tuesday. The Socialist government is focusing on raising taxes on the rich and big business to try to cut the deficit, but some economists and business owners warn this will stifle growth when the country needs it badly.

Supercomputers solve riddle of congenital heart defects

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? Both heredity and environment play a role in congenital heart defects, but exactly how various risk factors influence the development of the heart during pregnancy has been a mystery -- until now.

With the aid of a supercomputer, an international, interdisciplinary research team has analysed millions of data points. This has allowed the scientists to show that a huge number of different risk factors -- for example in the form of genetic defects -- influence the molecular biology of heart development.

"The discovery of a biological common denominator among many thousands of risk factors is an important step in health research, which in time can improve the prevention and diagnosis of congenital heart defects," explains Professor Lars Allan Larsen from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen.

Research results have recently been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The project was supported by the Danish Heart Association, Novo Nordisk Foundation and Danish National Research Foundation, among others.

Tailored treatment in future

Scientists have analysed several thousand genetic mutations and environmental risk factors associated with heart malformations in the hope of finding a pattern or common factor.

"Our investigations show that many different genetic factors together with environmental factors can influence the same biological system and cause disease. The results are also interesting in a broader perspective, because it is probable that similar interactions are also valid for diseases such as schizophrenia, autism, diabetes and cancer," says Kasper Lage, Director of Bioinformatics at Harvard University.

Thus the results of the study give scientists an idea of how different combinations of variations in hereditary material can dispose the individual to disease: "This is interesting if we want to make treatment more efficient by tailoring an optimal approach for each individual patient," adds Professor S?ren Brunak from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, University of Copenhagen.

Complex pattern creation provides new knowledge

When the international research team brought a systems biology perspective to bear on the huge data mass, they could see previously unknown and complex correlations between known risk factors and heart biology:

"Systems biology is a relatively new and holistic research field that uses bioinformatics and supercomputers to investigate highly complex biological problems. For example, we know of a number of genetic mutations that cause heart defects -- but it is first now we have been able to show which biological systems in the heart are influenced by the mutations in question," explains Professor Lars Allan Larsen.

The research approach of systems biology can lead to surprising and pioneering conclusions, but the work is difficult and requires a great degree of interdisciplinary collaboration. In this case team members include genetic scientists, cardiac specialists and experts in bioinformatics from universities, hospitals and industry.

Rat and ant rescues 'don't show empathy'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2012) ? Studies of how rats and ants rescue other members of their species do not prove that animals other than humans have empathy, according to a team led by Oxford University scientists.

Empathy -- recognizing and sharing feelings experienced by another individual -- is a key human trait and to understand its evolution numerous studies have looked for evidence of it in non-human animals.

The ability to rescue another individual in distress, a typical empathic response of humans, appears in several other animals. Two recent laboratory studies led by US and French researchers looked at how rats and ants will attempt to free individuals of the same species they share a cage or nest with which have been restrained. However, writing in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, the Oxford-led team argues that such studies are not rigorous enough to separate examples of 'pro-social' behavior, the tendency to behave so as to benefit another individual, from genuine empathy.

'Empathy has been proposed as the motivation behind the sort of 'pro-social' rescue behavior in which one individual tries to free another,' said Professor Alex Kacelnik of Oxford University's Department of Zoology, lead author of the article, 'however, the reproductive benefits of this kind of behavior are relatively well understood as, in nature, they are helping individuals to which they are likely to be genetically related or whose survival is otherwise beneficial to the actor.

'To prove empathy any experiment must show an individual understands another's feelings and is driven by the psychological goal of improving another's wellbeing. Our view is that, so far, there is no proof of this outside of humans.'

The team highlights how interpretations of pro-social behavior vary -- rat rescues, for instance, are regarded as being motivated by empathy whilst ant rescues are not -- even though the observed behavior (pulling on the legs or tail of the trapped individual, followed by biting at the restraint) are very similar.

In order to prove empathy any experiment would need to show that individuals changed their response if the circumstances changed; for instance moving away from a trapped individual if that reduced the trapped animal's distress. It would also need to disentangle empathy from acting simply to stop the trapped animal's stress signals -- something that can be psychologically selfish and does not need to involve empathy.

Solving the riddle of empathy would have important implications not just for the sciences but for philosophy and ethics. However, the team concludes scientists will have to come up with new, more rigorous studies to show that empathy exists outside of humans.

Should You Buy Land in Merced, California? - UCLA Real Estate Wire

In his new book, UCLA architect Thom Mayne argues that you should! ? Last year, the NY Times wrote a piece about the large number of deeply discounted McMansions on the market in Merced. ?Has Prof. Mayne been purchasing these homes? ?Should you consider doing so? He argues that that Merced is a funky hybrid of being a leading agricultural center and that a nascent city is forming around the new UC Merced campus. He also sees a synergy as high speed rail brings Merced "closer" to California's mega-cities. ?

Spiny lobster season opens in Florida Keys

Commercial fishermen in the Florida Keys are optimistic as spiny lobster season begins.

The eight-month season opens Monday. The Florida Keys island chain typically makes up around 90 percent of the state catch each year.

Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen's Association President Bill Kelly tells The Miami Herald ( http://hrld.us/QEL7RK) that plentiful catches during the two-day mini-season last month indicate an abundance of lobsters available.

The catch was 5.21 million pounds in 2010 and 5.28 million pounds in 2011. The average price per pound spiked to $6.17 in 2010 and $6.67 in 2011.

Kelly says the demand for live lobsters in Asia has boosted prices as much as $3 a pound since 2009.

Romney in Olympic spotlight with horse competition

(AP) ? Rarely has an Olympic dressage horse received as much attention as Rafalca.

The 15-year-old, German-bred mare is part-owned by Mitt Romney's wife and has been the source of political jokes questioning how the Republican presidential candidate can claim to know the problems of ordinary Americans when he inhabits the rarified world of dressage.

The sport, which is better known in Europe than the U.S., is the equine equivalent of ballet. Horse and rider (wearing top hat and tails) go through a series of steps that look like the horse is dancing: twirling pirouettes, prancing trots and the crowd-pleasing "flying change," which looks like the horse is skipping.

Ann Romney is expected to attend Rafalca's Olympic debut, which gets under way Thursday with the Grand Prix dressage test at Greenwich Park, home of all Olympic equestrian events.

She returned to London after her husband unleashed a torrent of criticism in the British press when, shortly after arriving for the Olympics' opening ceremony, he said the problems facing Olympic organizers were "disconcerting." It was the first of several gaffes that followed during campaign-style visits to Israel and Poland that were supposed to show off his foreign policy chops.

Rafalca's turn in the equestrian arena might focus an Olympic spotlight on another issue facing Romney, his vast personal wealth during tough economic times in the United States. He is worth as much as $250 million.

His wife's financial interest in Rafalca, a bay Oldenburg, has fed criticism that Romney is out of touch with the concerns of more modest-income voters. A top-flight dressage horse can cost more than six-figures, with upkeep running from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month. The Romneys own several horses.

The issue has been the inspiration of several episodes of political satirist Stephen Colbert's "The Colbert Report." Just this week Comedy Central aired a piece about Colbert taking a dressage lesson from Michael Barisone, the U.S. dressage team's reserve rider in the 2008 Olympics, in a bid to disprove the sport's elitist reputation.

"Dressage is the new American pastime!" Colbert declared.

Dressed like Roy Rogers, Colbert pressed Barisone to explain how a horse is selected to undergo the intense, years-long training that dressage requires, wondering out loud if at one point the horse just says: "Dad, I don't want to go into battle, I just want to DANCE!"

Out at Greenwich Park on Wednesday, such jokes were far from the minds of the U.S. dressage team, which has a shot at the bronze team medal. Germany and Britain are currently favored for the top medals.

"All of our horses are peaking at the right time," said U.S. team member Tina Konyot, who will ride Calecto V. "The other competitors are watching us."

Rafalca's rider Jan Ebeling said he welcomed the attention, negative or not, that the Romneys' stake in Rafalca has given the sport since it's given him a chance to show that dressage isn't about millionaires but hard work.

"I think the biggest misconception is always that people think that you just sit on a horse and they just kind of trot around in circles," he said. "That really is not the case."

A typical dressage horse requires up to a decade of training to compete at Olympic levels. Horse and rider work very much as a team, with the rider giving the horse invisible cues through subtle leg, hand and seat shifts. The horse is judged from 0-10 on executing a standard test of 33 movements:

?PASSAGE: a prancing, high-striding step

?PIAFFE: a passage done in place

?HALF-PASS: where the horse moves forward and sideways at the same time by crossing over its legs

?PIROUETTE: where the horse completes a full circle in place while cantering

?FLYING CHANGE: where the horse changes the sequence of its steps

The highest scoring teams from Thursday's Grand Prix advance to a second, harder test called the Grand Prix Special on Aug. 7. The 18 highest-scoring individual riders then perform a freestyle set to music to determine individual medal scores. That competition is Aug. 9.

The German-born Ebeling, who became a U.S. citizen in 1998, said the Romneys have been great supporters of the sport and have helped boost its visibility.

"I really welcome the attention," he said. "It's given us a fantastic opportunity to have our sport ? have visibility in our sport ? and show what we're really about, show that it is an Olympic discipline and show people how much we work to get there."

A campaign spokeswoman said Mrs. Romney's schedule in London was too busy for her to comment.
