Maine TV news co-anchors quit on the air

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ? Two news co-anchors for a Maine television station surprised viewers and colleagues by quitting on the air, later citing frustration with their management.

Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio announced their resignations at the end of Tuesday's 6 p.m. newscast on WVII.

The two didn't give specific reasons on the air for their sudden departure. Consiglio said that while they enjoyed reporting the news, "some recent developments have come to our attention, though, and departing together is the best alternative we can take."

Michaels said she and Consiglio were "are very sorry for having to say goodbye for now, but we'll still be around." She plans to pursue a writing career and paint, and Consiglio said he would continue his career "in a different capacity."

Their boss said Wednesday they had been on their way out the door anyway. He said he was not surprised by the action they took.

"Sometimes people leave before they're officially told to leave," said Mike Palmer, station vice president and general manager. He declined to discuss issues that may have caused disagreements but said, "There are things that they know."

Michaels, who was the station's news director, said in an email to The Associated Press that there was "a regular un-doing of decisions made by me." She also questioned the station's treatment of political stories and said it did not consider news programming important enough.

WVII and another station Palmer manages, Fox affiliate WFVX, have made headlines before. In 2006, The New York Times reported that Palmer prohibited further stories on global warming after the stations reported from a movie theater where Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was opening.

Michaels wrote she had "no clue" she was going to be let go.

She and Consiglio, she wrote, "were Bangor's longest running news team with more than six years on the news together. We wanted to be able to say a thoughtful, heart-felt good-bye to our viewers and to the many communities we served over the years. We did not defame the company in any way over the air. The goodbye was cordial, sincere and done with integrity."

The AP left messages with Consiglio. Both told the Bangor Daily News after their last newscast that they were frustrated with management and cited a dispute over journalistic practices.

Asked about reaction from viewers in the small market served by WVII, an ABC affiliate, Palmer said, "I have not heard from a single viewer."

But he said he had received about 20 applications for their jobs after posting them Tuesday night on an industry website.

"I've had people from all over the country send resumes and audition reels," Palmer said.

Consiglio, 28, started with WVII as a sports reporter in April 2006. Michaels, 46, spent six years at the station.

MILWAUKEE ? Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett presented five MPS high school seniors with $1,000 college scholarships Wednesday, November 21st at the Fresh Coast Classic College Fair.

Scholarship recipients include:?

Brittany Austin, (Riverside High School): ?I will prove to everyone that I will not be another statistic.?

Maria Huck, (Rufus King): ?My dad died my freshman year, and since then, I?ve expanded the definition of ?family.???

Aaliyah Rodgers, (Rufus King): ?High school seniors are walking a tight rope. They have to set aside time for each aspect of their life or the rope will crumble from beneath their feet leaving them to fall flat on their face.??

Miguel Lomeil, (Milwaukee Hamilton): ?The time I spent in Mexico opened my eyes to how cruel the world can be. I was used to life in the United States and the things we take for granted such as water, food, clothing, shelter and education.?

Ivonne Rosado, (South Division): ?One way I want to help my community is by combating racism. Immigrants are often not considered human beings, more like aliens or monsters. Isn?t our society the true monsters when they discriminate??

The Fresh Coast Classic began through the Running Rebels Community Organization as a way to get youth more interested in attending college and gain exposure to HBCU?s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

The first classic took place in 2007 with more than 4,000 attendees for all of the events.

Currently in its sixth year, the Fresh Coast Classic kicks off with a college fair November 21st, followed by a basketball tournament.

Ron Paul stands with secessionists. But how many are there, really?

Rep. Ron Paul (R) of Texas may be retiring from Congress but he still knows how to stir a pot, metaphorically speaking. In the latest example of his ability to get people talking he?s issued a statement that?s supportive of state petitions to secede from the US.

You?ve heard about those petitions, right? They?re on a section of the White House website intended to allow citizens the ability to express their opinions about the direction of the US government. Disgruntled voters have now initiated petitions for each of the 50 states to withdraw from the union. The one for Texas has the most signatures ? 115,751 the last time we looked.

Anyway, all this got Congressman Paul thinking. ?Is it treasonous to want to secede from the United States?? he writes.

While many people might think this question was answered by the Civil War, the ?principles of self-governance and voluntary association are at the core of our founding,? Paul argues. He adds that if secession is off the table, there?s nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on individual liberties.

?Consider the ballot measures that passed in Colorado and Washington State regarding marijuana laws,? Paul writes, pointing out that the residents of those states have indicated they want pot policy to be different than the federal government's.

"At what point should the people dissolve the political bands which have connected them to an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government?" Paul concludes.

Well, we?ve got a couple of comments here. The first is that, yes, for all practical purposes the Civil War did settle this question. But we?ll move past that since Paul is just writing rhetorically here. He notes that he has no expectation Texas is really going to secede.

The second is that this argument appears to greatly discount the power of democracy. Without the threat of secession, there?s nothing to stop the gradual slide toward a police state? That would mean elections don?t matter. Why bother to have them?

Which brings us to pot. Yes indeed, voters in Colorado and Washington indicated a desire for a different kind of antidrug regime. But would it be churlish to note that voters in both those states delivered their electoral votes to President Obama? That means they also approved of the administration that?s supposed to enforce national antidrug laws, which were passed by duly elected members of Congress. At the least, they're sending a mixed message here. Paul is picking the result he agrees with and discounting the one he opposes.

It's the same thing with regards to Obamacare. He says the federal government doesn't appear to be respecting the wishes of states that refuse to establish the health insurance stores, or "exchanges," called for under the law. But the law makes clear that if states don't establish these, the federal government will step in and do it for them. If US voters truly wished to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, they could have elected Mitt Romney. They didn't.

Lastly, it's possible that Paul is overstating the popularity of the secession petitions in general. He wouldn't be alone in this ? even the media, in reacting to them, in essence elevate them to a level they may not quite deserve.

That's because many fewer individuals may have signed them than appears at first glance. While the petitions focus on particular states, signees may be from anywhere. They can ? and do ? sign more than one petition.

Neal Caron, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, has, with the help of his students, analyzed the particulars of more than 900,000 of the signatures, and his conclusion is that they represent about 321,000 different people. In essence, each signee put their John Hancock down in three places.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, support for secession was strongest by far in red states Obama lost, and strongest of all in ? you guessed it ? Texas.

What does this mean? It means that the secession craze is narrower than it at first appeared. And maybe it also means that in the end, talk of secession is about rejecting other American voters the secessionists don't agree with, as much as the federal government.?

8 Tips for Dealing with Difficult Relatives During the Holiday Season ...

Holidays can be tough. Some people love them; some people dread them.

I thought a lot about the holidays as I was writing Happier at Home, because the holiday season tends to be a time when we focus on home. Maybe you?re going ?home? the way I go home to Kansas City for Christmas?which may be fun for you, or not. Maybe you?re deciding how to decorate your home. Maybe you?re making an effort to arrange the holidays the way you experienced them as a child?or the opposite. Maybe you?re feeling sad, or happy, about whom you will or won?t be seeing.

From talking to people, it seems that one of the biggest happiness challenges of the holidays is dealing with difficult relatives. You want to have a nice dinner, but Uncle Bobby makes you crazy. What to do?

1. Ahead of time, spend a few minutes thinking about how you want to behave. If you?ve had unpleasant experiences in the past, think about why they were unpleasant and what you could do to change the dynamics of the situation. Get more sleep. Give yourself more travel time. Pick a seat far away from Uncle Bobby. In particular?

2. Think about how topics that seem innocuous to you might upset someone else. You may think you?re showing a polite interest, but some questions will rub a person the wrong way: ?So do you have a girlfriend yet?? ?When are you two going to get married/start a family?? ?Didn?t you give up smoking?? ?Can you afford that?? ?When are you going to get a real job?? Show an interest with more open-ended questions, like ?What are you up to these days?? or ?What?s keeping you busy?? Also?

3. Dodge strife. Some families enjoy arguing passionately amongst themselves; however, most don?t handle arguments very well. If you know Uncle Bobby?s view of the election is going to drive you crazy, don?t bring it up! And if he brings it up, you don?t have to engage. Try to make a joke of it, and say something like, ?Let?s agree to disagree,? ?Let?s not talk about that, and give the rest of the family something to be thankful for,? etc.

4. Don?t drink much alcohol. It can seem festive and fun to fill up your glass, but it?s easy to lose track of how much you?re drinking. Alcohol makes some people feel merry, but it also makes some people feel combative, or self-pitying, or lowers their inhibitions in a destructive way. I basically had to give up drinking because alcohol makes me so belligerent. And if other people seem to be trying to avoid or curb their drinking (or their eating, for that matter), don?t make a big deal of it or urge them to indulge.

5. As best you can, play your part in the tradition. For some people, traditions are very, very important; for others, no. You may feel irritated by your brother?s insistence on having exactly the same food every Thanksgiving, or by your mother?s extreme reaction to your suggestion to eat dinner an hour earlier. Try to be patient and play your part. In the long run, traditions and rituals tend to help sustain happiness and family bonds. On the other hand?

6. If you?re the one who wants everything to be perfect, try to ease up on yourself and everyone else, so you can enjoy the day, whatever happens. Even if the day isn?t exactly the way you hoped it would be, try to enjoy what it is. My mother once told me, ?The things that go wrong often make the best memories,? and it?s really true. And too much fussing to make an experience ?perfect? can sometime ruin it altogether.

7. Find some fun. One of my Secrets of Adulthood is Just because something is fun for someone else doesn?t mean it?s fun for you, and vice versa. If the time with your relatives is meant to be fun, make sure you?re spending at least some time doing something that?s fun for you. Working in the kitchen, playing touch football, sitting around talking, running errands, watching the parade on TV ? these things may or may not be fun for you, no matter how the rest of the family feels.

8. Find reasons to be grateful. Be thankful that you get to cook, or that you don?t have to cook. Be thankful that you get to travel, or that you don?t have to travel. Be thankful for your family or your friends. Be grateful for electricity and running water. Find something. Studies show that gratitude is a major happiness booster. Also, feeling grateful toward someone crowds out emotions like resentment and annoyance.

Wait, you might be thinking, these strategies don?t tell me how to deal with my difficult relatives ? they tell me how to behave myself. Well, guess what! You can?t change what your difficult relatives are going to do; you can only change yourself. But when you change, a relationship changes.

Do WWE NXT attackers Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns have a ruthless vendetta against Ryback?

For two consecutive nights, three young WWE NXT competitors ? Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns ? have seemingly protected CM Punk, ensuring the WWE Champion has been able to wriggle away from his rivals and out of harm's way.

They've also pummeled Ryback with not one, but two table-shattering powerbombs.

Punk has yet to address the controversial ending to Survivor Series in which Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns hit the ring and brutalized Ryback right after he Shell Shocked both Punk and John Cena. (PHOTOS) But after the rowdy trio once again stepped in the destructive path of the near 300-pound beast on Raw, speculation will only intensify about The Straight Edge Superstar's possible connection to these NXT assailants.

What if Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns aren't out to defend the WWE Champion, however? What if their mission instead is to tear apart the fastest-rising Superstar in WWE piece by piece?

Before Ryback could even get to the ring Monday night to crash Punk's celebration of his one-year anniversary as WWE Champion, he was blindsided by Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns, who wailed on the hulking contender with a series of vicious punches and kicks. Then in a devastating display of d?j? vu, the NXT invaders drove him through the same announce table as they did at Survivor Series. (PHOTOS | VIDEO) As the trio took to the ring to revel in their rampage, Punk didn't even seem to know what to make of it, but nonetheless enjoyed yelling "Best in the World!" in triumph after the dismantling of arguably the biggest threat to his coveted WWE Title.

There is something ever so curious about the way these NXT attackers, dressed uniformly in black from head to toe, have made their presence felt during the closest moments of back-to-back WWE programs. It's easy to point fingers and believe Punk and Paul Heyman are behind it all, but isn't that exactly what many members of the WWE Universe thought about Brad Maddox when the rogue referee decided to attack Ryback at WWE Hell in a Cell and seal a victory for Punk? Just one week later on Raw, we learned straight from Maddox that he acted alone and was trying to make a name for himself in the hopes of becoming a WWE Superstar. (VIDEO)

Is it a stretch to think Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns want not to protect Punk's WWE Title reign, but to make an emphatic statement and thrust themselves into the spotlight?

As WWE.com extensively detailed following their first attack Sunday night, these young NXT standouts have made it clear they're three of the most talented and dangerous athletes in WWE's developmental system. (FULL STORY) They've already proven their propensity?for risk-taking during their ascent up the ranks in a short period of time. Now, rather than patiently await their promotion to WWE, they've taken it upon themselves to seize the attention of the entire WWE Universe by mercilessly and methodically targeting the hottest young Superstar whose past stomping ground was WWE's developmental system as well.

Throughout history, rebel groups ranging from The New World Order to The Nexus have made a dramatic impact in sports-entertainment with unpredictable attacks. What quicker way for Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns also to leave their mark than to destroy a monster who is seemingly indestructible?

As questions continue to swirl over Punk's increasingly controversial WWE Title reign, three shaggy-haired newcomers appear to be hell-bent on shifting the buzz to themselves.

If there is more of this to come, Ryback might have to stop looking ahead to Punk's WWE Championship, and start looking behind him to see what kind of wild ambush is next.
