2012 Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP) Annual Meeting ...

This year?s LILRC Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP) Annual Meeting was an all day event that took place on Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library and featured a free MLA Continuing Education program.

The HLSP Annual Meeting kicked off with an outstanding talk from Janessa Rick, P.T., creator of Body4Brain and The EASY (Early Advantage to Support Your) Baby Development Program, who discussed how the latest research from neuroscience can help enhance the lives of both children and adults with sensorimotor concerns that affect motor, psychosocial behavior, and academic skills.? She also discussed the theory behind Brain Based Therapy and how it is being used to help the children, adults, and families who are effected by these diagnoses.

Following Ms. Rick?s presentation, attendees were provided with an update on the NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region from Renae Barger, Executive Director, including an overview of the RML, membership and benefits, recent activities, funding information and much more.

Following lunch, our final speaker of the day took to the podium.? Carrie Iwema, Information Specialist in Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh, Health Sciences Library System presented, ?ABCs of DNA: Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers.??? Carrie explored basic concepts such as genes and chromosomes and provides an overview of genetic disorders, genetic testing, genetic counseling, and the Human Genome Project through demonstrations and a number of engaging videos.? She demonstrated a variety of reliable health information resources, conducted hands-on activities with attendees, and wrapped up the event with a terrific video that summed-up the major topics covered throughout the program.?
